NAfME 2015 All Northwest Choir

2015 is also an NAfME All Northwest High School Honor Choir year.   If you are also a member of NAfME (Alaska AMEA), you can enter your students in that competition.

The audition materials for this contest are the same as ASAA All-State auditions - so you can record once to enter students in two competitions.

Online CEU for Alaska ACDA

We are pleased to announce a new initiative for our state choral directors.  Our long-term goal to support members in their professional development is finally being realized.  Yesterday we received word from the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development (EED) that they have approved our request to have ACDA added to the list of national professional organizations approved for granting continuing education credits, and as of today ACDA is on the list.

For those new to the state, a 5-year Alaska teaching certificate renewal requires applicants to have a total of six semester hours of credit completed.  Up to three CEUs may be used to renew a 5-year certificate.  CEUs count as lower division credits toward the renewal; three upper division or graduate level credits are also required.

Dr. Scott Dorsey has created an online conference specifically for Alaskan choral music educators - available free of charge to Alaska ACDA members.  We have the opportunity to earn 1 CEUs by taking the free online conference beginning today.  The deadline to complete the conference is December 20th.  You probably already received a personal invitation from Scott today, but in case you did not, I am copying his letter below.

I hope that many of you will take advantage of this wonderful opportunity for professional development - no travel required!

On behalf of Laura Blackwood and the entire board of the Alaska state chapter of the American Choral Directors Association, I am delighted to share the exciting news that we have developed The On-line Conference, a continuing education program exclusively for Alaska ACDA members.  This offering has been endorsed by the Alaska Department of Education & Early Development, Teacher Education and Certification.

The On-Line Conference program is designed to provide Alaska ACDA members with the opportunity to utilize conference resources as a tool for continuing education and artistic edification. Once completed, the participating member will receive continuing education credit through ACDA .

You can download the on-line Conference document at:

The deadline for completion of this first On-Line Conference is December 20, 2014. There is NO COST for this program.

We hope you will find this program of use as you strive to advance the choral art in the great state of Alaska.  If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know.

Gearing up for the school year!

I hope you all had a wonderful, restful and/or productive summer!  There are several exciting upcoming opportunities for our Alaska ACDA membership, which we will post more information on soon.

As I prepare and plan for the year, my thoughts rest on a couple of serious vocal students who are preparing auditions for music colleges.  Below is a link to a wonderful article which I hope will assist you with practical information on guiding younger singers and their parents through this process:

2014 Northwest ACDA Division Conference and Honor Choirs

In just over a month, choral directors and students from the six northwest division states will be traveling to Seattle, Washington, March 13-16 for the 2014 NWACDA "Connection" Divisional Conference.  Clinicians from around the country have planned sessions to meet the needs of choral directors ranging from children's chorus directors through collegiate level.

This is a wonderful professional development and networking opportunity.  Sessions by clinicians from around the country range from practical how-to's, theory of music education, working with volunteer choirs, and - my favorite - reading sessions.  I would encourage you to make plans to attend if at all possible.  Airfare from Anchorage to Seattle is decent this time of year, and what a great way to start your Spring Break!

Representing the great state of Alaska at this conference are 40 students, ages 6th to 12th grades. The students submitted auditions for the Children's Honor Choir, Youth Honor Choir, Men's Honor Choir, and Women's Honor Choir.  Unlike other divisional Honor Choir contests, there are no set state quotas for selecting students.  So these 40 are among the top ranking students auditioning from a six state area.  Congratulations and good luck to the honor choir students and directors from Grace Christian School, Kenai Middle School, Kenai Central High School, Ketchikan High School, Kodiak High School, Palmer High School, and Sitka High School!
